He was a Private First Class Rifleman in the 129th Infantry Regiment. Wounded in his right ankle by a Japanese tank shell during the Battle of Luzon near Clark Feld and Fort Stotsenburg on Luzon Island in the Philippines on January 28, 1945 while carrying a message and received The Purple Heart.
