During WWII he served in the U.S. Army, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was sent overseas with the 34th Infantry Division. He was wounded by an enemy shell while fighting in the Rome Arno Campaign, earning (posthumously) a Purple Heart. He also earned the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with a Bronze Battle Star, Victory Medals, National Defense Service Medal and the Distinguished Unit Citation.
