As an U.S.Army National Guardsman he was recalled in 1942 and served through 1945 as a Sergeant in the Engineering Corps. He served in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe and received a Bronze Star for building a temporary bridge across the Rhine while under heavy enemy bombardment.
