He originally enlisted in the US Navy, but was rejected by the attending physician due to a bad heart. He then enlisted in the US Army. Enlistment Date: July 2, 1944. Discharge (Honorable) Date: August 13, 1946. He was a Private in the US Army, where he took part in the Battle of Iwo Jima in February of 1945, and then later in the Battle of Okinawa in April and May of 1945. During the battle of Okinawa, he was wounded by a Japanese sharp shooter, and subsequently sent to a Portable Surgical/Convalescent Hospital, where the doctors performed surgery on his wounds. "Diagnosis: Wound(s), perforating (points of entrance and exit) with no nerve or artery involvement; Location: Small intestine generally; Causative Agent: Bullet, Rifle." He was admitted to the Hospital in May of 1945, and discharged in September of 1945.
