Served in the U.S. Army from 1943 through 1945. He was assigned to the 135 Regiment in the 34th Division during their push into Italy. As an infantry rifleman, he also served with a mortar squad and later as an assistant squad leader. His regiment pushed through Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno, North Apennines and the Po Valley. On February 5, 1944, while on a scouting mission around Monte Cassino he was wounded in action and temporarily hospitalized. Once released he rejoined his company's push against the Wehrmacht, ending with the German surrender of Italy in the spring of 1945. He earned the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal, Expert Rifle Marksman Badge and Good Conduct Medal.
