Activity During WWII

He enlisted in the US Navy in 1938. He played French horn in a Navy band stationed on board the USS Pennsylvania, which was later sent to Pearl Harbor. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, he saw the first bomb drop and explode at a hangar on Ford Island while he was playing the morning colors. After Pearl Harbor, he played for civilians and troops throughout Italy.
