In May 1943, he was assigned to the 343d Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 98th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 9th Air Force, in the European Theater. On May 6, 1943, his B-24 Liberator was on a mission to bomb Italy's Reggio di Calabria harbor while on the mission the engine faltered and tried to land at Malta. It crashed into the Mediterranean Sea and he was the only crewman that didn't survive. On June 20, 2023, DPAA announced that after missing in action, he has now been accounted for.
