In 1944 she enlisted in the U.S. Navy WAVES (Woman accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services) which was created during WWII to free up male personnel for sea duty. Upon completion of a basic training, she was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, FL as a Telegrapher, typing in coded messages for the government.
