He served from 1941 to 1945 as a flight mechanic in the South Pacific on Enewetak and Tarawa. He spent one night with a buddy in another foxhole and discovered the next morning that his own has been blown to bits. He came home to work as a flight instructor and an airplane hobbyist for the rest of his life.
