She was 18 years old and had just graduated from high school in the spring of 1942. She lived with her sister in 1943 in Portland, Oregon. Each was a Woman Ordnance Worker, WOW, that welded on ships designated for the war effort. 1944 saw her returning to South Dakota to marry her fiancé. He had been deferred from service per flat feet and the need to remain on the farm to produce food and fiber for the nation.
