The day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, he and two of his brothers joined the army. He was an officer in the field artillery and served as a battle commander throughout WW2. He served under General Patton in the Battle of the Bulge as a forward observer, and was also in the Battle for northern France and the battle for central Europe. He earned three battle stars for the European campaign, and was decorated with the Bronze Star and several other medals during WW2. He also earned three battle stars in the Korean War and served over 25 years in the army.
