He enlisted the week after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to the "Bloody 100th" Bomb Group as a navigator flying in B-17 bombers. On May 30, 1943, he shipped out for the European Theater. In the week before D-Day, he superintending the preparation of maps, flight plans and formations for over 100 different missions and variations. He flew 32 missions over Europe and remained in England until the Germans surrendered in May 1945. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross.
