He served as a pilot and Squadron Commander in the 418th Bomb Squadron, "Bloody 100th" Bomb Group. He flew a dozen missions in a B-17 bomber. On October 10, 1943, he was shot down after leading "M'lle Zig Zag" and spent the remainder of the war as a Prisoner of War at Stalag Luft III. Awarded the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Prisoner of War Medal, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross.
