He was first stationed in Iceland where he was assigned to intercept communications and determine German positions. His unit became part of the third army led by General Patton. He became captain of the 3255 Signal service company, XII corps, 3d Army. He landed on Utah Beach on July 14,1944 and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He led all 100 men under his command behind enemy lines and brought all of them back – except one- back home.
