He was a member of the OSS, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was on the British submarine, HRMS Thorogood for one of his spy missions tracking the movement of Japanese ships . He spent more than 6 months behind Japanese lines in China working with Communist Chinese and Nationalists Chinese and the general Chinese populace to get information on the movements of the Japanese forces, destroy railways and other transportation and train, aid, and abet the Chinese in their battle to fight the Japanese invaders. For his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star, twice.
