Enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Midway (CV-41), attaining the rank of Electronic Technicians Mate Second Class. His post in the radar room on the Midway was directly below the carrier’s big guns, and exposure to the noise of those guns lead to a progressive hearing loss, which became nearly complete at the end.
