In early 1945, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was on an infantry replacement troop ship in the Philippines, headed for the 24th Infantry Division to be part of the invasion of Japan when the atomic bombs were dropped. He then became part of one of the first waves of Allied occupying forces in Japan once the war ended. Honorably discharged in 1947.
