Activity During WWII

Before completing high school he started his many years of military service by joining the Oklahoma Army National Guard at Allen, Oklahoma on 11 October, 1938. His National Guard Unit was mobilized on 16 September, 1940. He was with the 45th Division during his training at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma and Camp Barkley, Texas. During this period, he advanced to the grade of Staff Sergeant and was selected to attend Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. On 14 January, 1943 he was commissioned an Infantry Officer, graduating with OCS Class Number 151. His first assignment was as Executive Officer, Company M, 291st Infantry, 75th Infantry Division, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was then transferred to Company D, 358th Infantry, 90th Infantry Division where he eventually served as commander of that company for the duration of his time in Europe during WWII. He competed his career of almost 35 years in the US Army in July of 1973. He had been awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star w/2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, Good Conduct, Armed Forces Re- serve, American Defense, World War Il Victory, Army Occupation (Japan), Korean Service, United Nations Service, Oklahoma Distinguished Service, Oklahoma Long Service (35 yrs), Croix De Guerre (presented by the French), and Korean Conflict (presented by Korea) Medals.
