Activity During WWII

He enlisted in the Marine Corps after completing high school. He was married to Genowefa Hendricks of Quantico, Virginia. He was assigned to the Headquarters Company, 4th Marine Regiment, in the Philippine Islands when the Second World War broke out. He served there throughout the invasion and capture of the Philippines. He was taken prisoner of war by the Japanese when Corregidor fell on the 6th of May 1942 and the remaining American and Filipino troops were forced to surrender. He was moved on the LIMA MARU from Manila to Takao, Formosa (Taiwan) on the 21st of September 1942. He spent two months in Taiwan before being leaving aboard the DAINICHI MARU, on the 15th of November 1942 and arriving in Moji, Japan on the 25th, and then sent overland to Tokyo. Upon arrival, he was sent to the Tokyo Number 1 Dispatched Camp located near the Mitsubishi Docks in Yokohama. The Prisoners of War (POW) were used by Mitsubishi Heavy Industry Yokohama Ship-Building Company. He died from pneumonia while a POW in a Japanese Prison Camp on the 29th of September 1943. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
