He was in the Sixth Marine Division. He fought in the battle of Okinawa. He fought hand to hand combat with a Japanese soldier. After the war was over, he took the Japanese soldiers belongings to the Japanese embassy in Washington DC to try to return it to the Japanese soldier's family, but the embassy said that they couldn’t do that. The medals he won are: 1)Asiatic- Pacific campaign Medal with one bronze campaign star. 2) Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal for service during the period December 22, 1931, to December 21, 1935 3) China Service Medal 4) World War II Victory Medal 5) Rifle Marksman Badge 6) Honorable service button 7) Certificate Award “The United States of America honors the memory of Byron Patton Pope in recognition of devoted and selfless consecration to the service of our country in the Armed Forces of the United States.
