Crew member of a B17 bomber, 95th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. Flew from England to bomb Nazi war targets. Was shot down after bombing U-Boat facilities at Bremen, Germany on 16 Dec 1943, became MIA, and never found. Starting in 2000 his brother set out on an intensive cold case investigation to determine what happened to S/Sgt. Darter, and to "bring him home." This investigation was successful in the discovery of the entire story of what happened to his 10-man crew, and that four crew were still alive who shared what they knew about Eugene and two other crew who also vanished.
