He enlisted on November 15, 1942. He served in the US Navy on the USS Eldorado as a radioman second class and fought at Guam, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. On February 19, 1945, he witnessed the raising of the US flag atop Mt. Suribachi at Iwo Jima. On November, 1945, he was discharged.
