He served in the *US Army and Air Force and flew 30 missions over France and Germany. As a nose gunner and chief armorer, he flew over France on D-Day in a B-24 Liberator bomber. His 8th Air Force "Silent Yoakum" aircraft and crew were assigned a mission to destroy a German encampment in St. Laurent, France.
