He enlisted in the US Army on March 23, 1943. Volunteering for the paratroopers, he joined Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Platoon, 101st Airborne Division "Screaming Eagles", as a machine gunner. On D-Day, he jumped into Normandy and was one of the initial 14 men to take part on the Brecourt Manor assault later that morning. He manned one of the 30 caliber machine guns and was awarded the Bronze Star. Received the Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation.
