He served in the US Army from October 1942 until January 1946, in the 83rd Infantry, E Company, 331st Division. His unit was sent to relieve the 101st Airborne and landed on Omaha Beach on June 23, 1944. After advancing to the town of Carentan in France, a fight ensued with a German Panzer tank unit and he was captured and sent to a POW camp, Stalag IIIC, in Poland, until he was liberated by Russian soldiers on January 1, 1945.
