He joined the US Navy in 1943 at the age of 17 and went to hospital corp school. He was in Company A, 1st Battalion Marine Division and became a Navy Corpsman. His unit landed on Iwo Jima and he helped wounded Marines and sustained an injury himself.. Awarded a Silver Star and Purple Heart.
