Vernon was drafted in 1941. He was with the Maryland division 29th. Because he was older, he was selected to be a MP in the 720 MP Battalion who served in New Guinea from 1942 to 1945, the end of the war. Although the Australians were primary, the Americans were there. It was a brutal engagement.
