Joined the Army during World War II. He was trained as a paratrooper and also as an anti-tank specialist and served with C Company of the 272nd Regiment of the 69th Infantry Division and was thrust into combat during the Battle of the Bulge in Europe. He froze his feet walking across Europe in the winter of 1944-45. He was standing on the banks of the Elbe River in Germany ready to move on to Berlin if needed when Germany surrendered.
