Activity During WWII

He served from 18 May 1942 -12 May 1944. Final Duty Location: The Germans had defensive positions along a line known as the "Gustav Line" in the vicinity of Monte Cassino, Italy. The Allied Armies had to break through these defenses in order to liberate Rome. The 4th of this series of battles began May 11, 1944. My uncle died in battle May 12, 1944. The Allied Army successfully broke through the Gustav Line on May 18, 1944, and went on to liberate Rome. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart posthumously. His unit: 5th Army, 85th Infantry Division “Custer”, 338th infantry Regiment, First Battalion, Company A.
