Activity During WWII

He registered for the WWII draft on Registration Day (Oct. 16, 1940) at Local Board 435 in Remsen, New York. On January 13, 1942, he enlisted at Ft. Niagara, Youngstown, New York, as a private in the Warrant Officers, US Army branch. His Army serial number was 32211022. By August 1942, he had arrived in England as a corporal assigned to Headquarters Btry., 431st Sep CA Bn (AA), a Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft Unit. By December 1942 he had shipped off to North Africa where, on March 16, 1943, he was promoted to Technician fourth grade (Tech 4) Sergeant. In October 1943 he was stationed in Sicily, and in December 1943 was relocated to Sardinia. By October 1944, he was stationed in Corsica and traveled on leave to Naples, Rome, and Cassino in mainland Italy. He was discharged in December 1944, after three years’ service, following a line of duty injury by artillery shell fragments. He was awarded a Purple Heart, and his unit received a presidential citation for gallantry in combat.
