He flew in the 8th Air Force, 448th Bomb Group, 713th Bomb Squadron as a Bombardier on the B-24 Liberator. He flew 30 missions out of Seething England from May to December 1944. He flew on D-day, successfully striking costal targets in the area of the invasion beaches between Le Havre and Cherbourg. During the war he survived the loss of multiple aircraft parachuting to safety 4 times, once over occupied France, where he was rescued by Patton's Army. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and an award for Valor.
