Enlisted in the Army Air Force on the 17th of February 1943 he went through the Aviation Cadet training program and attended the Bombardier School in San Angelo Texas. He was promoted to Flight Officer on the 15th of August, 1945. During the course of the war, he earned the American Campaign Medal, Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal, as well as shooting Sharpshooter on Carbine, and Marksman on Pistol.
