My uncle enlisted himself into the marines in 1941 durning WW2. He was in high school and had his parents write a note to let him fight for his country. He fought as a young adult as best as he could. He died and was killed in action in the Solomon Islands. He would always write letters to his mom and she had not received any from him and requested via telegram if her son is okay. His body was returned to his family and was given a proper burial. He got the purple heart among many other awards.
