He served with the United States Navy from July 1942 to October 1945 in Seabees unit 26th Naval Construction Battalion, Company D Platoon 5. He participated in the Guadalcanal Campaign December 1942 to December 1943. He camped on Tulagi Island and crossed to Guadalcanal each morning to work at the airbase. He moved camp to Guadalcanal Island in April 1943. He was then stationed at various bases in California from January 1944 to October 1945.
