He wanted to enlist, but due to an eye injury sustained as a child, he was rejected for military service. He kept trying and was eventually accepted because of his high test scores. He was an instructor on the bomb loading systems at Lowry Field, CO. Due to his vision problem, he could have remained stateside, but after his brother, a B-24 tail gunner, was shot down and interred in a German POW camp, he decided that it wasn't fair that he should remain stateside while his brother was interred, so he volunteered for overseas service. He went to Northwest Field in Guam. He was an Armorer on the B-29 and was also a surveyor.
