As a Lt. Col. of the 31st Fighter Group he was among the first American airmen captured by the Germans upon being shot down in France on July 26, 1942. He was a POW for 33 months, most in Stalag Luft III, where he had lead role in security and planning attempts to escape (one providing the basis for and made famous by the movie the "The Great Escape" involving escape by 96 POWs), as set forth in his memoir "33 Months as a POW in Stalag Luft III."
