He served in the 330th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division. He died on July 2, 1944 in Carentan, France, in the weeks that followed the D-Day landings. He was in the forces that pushed southward to clear German troops out of France. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, and is buried at the Normandy American Cemetery, Coulleville-sur-Mer, France.
