Proudly served in the U.S. Navy from January 1946 to November 1947 as a Fireman 1st Class. He first served on the USS New York (BB-34) during the Operation Crosswords Nuclear Weapons Test at Bikini Atoll of the Marshall Islands. He then served on the USS Iowa (BB-61) where he completed his tour of duty.
