He joined the United States Army 36th Infantry Division on November 1, 1940, and entered active service on November 25, 1940. During his tour of duty, he served alongside his brother in the European Theatre, seeing action in Italy, France, and Africa. He was in the first wave of troops at Normandy Beach. During his service, he received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, two Bronze Battle Stars and numerous other awards and commendations. After receiving an honorable discharge in June of 1945, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served until March of 1948.
