Inducted into military service during World War II, following in the footsteps of his five older brothers. He was ultimately promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in General Patton's Third Army, eventually serving as a wartime sergeant. During his service in Germany, he saw the horrendous Nazi Dachau concentration camp, which left an indelible impression and fueled his lifelong fight to assist those who cannot fend for themselves.
