When WWII was declared December 1941, Eleanor supported the War effort as a volunteer in the Civil Air Patrol and was a Charter Member of Squadron #3 in Kansas City, Missouri. She participated in army type maneuvers, drills and learned to fly civilian airplanes. In 2024, Eleanor received posthumously the Civil Air Patrol Congressional Gold Meal for her service during WWII. The ceremony took place in the historic Roosevelt Memorial Airport hangar in Warm Springs, Georgia. The presentation ceremony was conducted by the Civil Air Patrol Georgia Wing Commander. The Gold Medal was obtained by the Civil Air Patrol North Central Historian based in Missouri.
