He was inducted into the U.S. Navy interrupting his college years at the University of Missouri. He was part of the U.S. Navy's 16th Special Fleet Battalion involved in Naval Construction. His first letter after shipping out to the Pacific Ocean area determined that he had arrived in the Mariana Islands (north of Guam), at his first station shortly before January 13, 1943 on one of the fleet's naval vessels, not in the temporary housing on the islands. He participated in the invasion of the islands of Saipan (prior to the US movement to recapture Guam) and Tinian which took place from November 1944 to February 1945, concurrent with the recapture of Guam.. He received a Certificate of Satisfactory Service on October 26, 1946 for his participation in the Tinian conflict. He was assigned as a Paymaster for the troops with whom he served.
