SGT William R. Freeman served in Company C, 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division during World War II. He deployed to Europe in April 1945, joining Patton’s Third Army in the Central Europe Campaign. His regiment advanced into southern Germany and Czechoslovakia, reaching the town of Volary where U.S. forces uncovered survivors of the Volary Death March in May 1945. He remained on occupation duty until July 1945, earning the European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one bronze service star for his service.
