He left high school to join the U.S. Navy. He was inducted into the U.S. Navy in Minneapolis, MN in 1945. He completed boot camp at Great Lakes Recruit Training Command and was appointed PO 3rd Class. Harold was transferred to California to serve in the Pacific Fleet as a Signalman 3. He was stationed aboard the USS Haven, USS Hector, USS Satyr, USS Askari and USS Jason. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the America Area Medal, the Word War II Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.
