Enlisting at age 17 following the death of his eldest brother in the Pacific Theater, as Fireman First Class he had responsibility for transportation and logistics in post-war Philippines, most specifically providing shore-based support for the transportation of servicemen. The role of Fireman First Class was to ensure the continued operation of U.S. naval assets during the reconstruction effort.
