Enlisting at age 17 following the death of his brother in the Pacific Theater, as Fireman First Class he had responsibility for transportation and logistics in post-war Philippines, most specifically providing shore-based support for the transportation of servicemen. The role of Firemen First Class was to ensure the continued operation of U.S. Naval assets during the reconstruction effort.
