Great Gram Grove took a job to aid the war effort. She became an employee of Sylvania Electric Company in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where she did “secret work.” Years later, when I found her life insurance application, my cousins and I would joke that she must have been a secret spy during the war. We now know she was making vacuum tubes for electronic equipment used in vital Navy, Army, and Air Force vehicles.
