Relationship
A Grateful American
He served as a Sergeant in the 102nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron that was part of the 102nd Cavalry Group (Mechanized), which was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division, V Corps. While fighting in the Normandy Campaign he used large prongs of scrap steel recovered from bombed out Nazi roadblocks and attached them to the front of tanks. These “Rhino” tanks were then able to accelerate up to the hedgerow and cut straight through instead of riding up over the hedgerow, which exposed the under belly of the tank. He fought in the following campaigns of the European Theatre: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace (Battle of the Bulge) and was awarded the European- African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Battle Stars, Purple Heart Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.
