Served in the U.S. Army from January 1941 until transferring to the Army Air Corp in January 1943. He served as a Bombardier on a B-24 named the Holy Joe in the 449th Bombardment Group. He participated as flight leader in 46 combat missions in the European Theater including some of the most heavily defended targets: Bucharest, Vienna and Ploesti. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air medal with 5 oak leaf clusters. Instructed in bombardiering for 12 months until his discharge in July 1945.
