He served in the United States Army during World War II with the 239th Military Police Company. His wartime specialties included Rifleman (745), Military Policeman (677), and Machine Gunner (605). He participated in the Southern Philippines Campaign (17 October 1944 – 1 July 1945), for which his unit was authorized to wear the Bronze Star device on the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon. He served overseas in the Philippines and Japan for 17 months in support of combat and occupation operations. As a Military Policeman, he conducted investigations involving black-market activity, fires, serious crimes, and vehicle accidents. His duties included highway patrol, enforcement of military regulations, inspection of vehicles for unauthorized materials, and security of troop trains and vital military points. He operated both jeeps and ¾-ton trucks while performing these responsibilities and remained subject to call at all times.
